While 2011 marked the best season of football for the Honey Badger, it was also the first indicator of problems to come. On October 25, 2011 he was suspended for one game for violating the college’s drug policy. Then, on August 10,2012, LSU’s football coach Les Miles shocked many by announcing the dismissal of Mathieu from the program due to repeated drug test failures. Mathieu showed promise, however, when he entered a drug rehabilitation program Texas. However, after ending his stay in Houston and planning to enroll for the fall semester, Mathieu was arrested on possession of marijuana.

Many people questioned whether this was the last of The Honey Badger’s football career. Nevertheless, Tyrann entered the 2013 draft, recording decent statistics at the combine and his pro day. Many teams seemed skeptical on whether to draft Mathieu or not due to his off-the-field issues, but Bruce Arians of the Arizona Cardinals decided to take a chance. Arians Drafted Mathieu in the third round as a free safety. This draft by the Cardinals is seen as a second chance at redemption for the former LSU star, and many analysts will have their eyes on him in the coming NFL season. The question remains: Will the Honey Badger make a new name for himself, or will his drug problems forever overshadow his fantastic skill?
